This research paper analyses the feasible benefits of an innovative design developed in China – the left-turn waiting area. The design uses a left lane extension that permits the vehicles to enter and wait at the intersection before the initiation of the left-turn green signal. This design has produced the desired increase in the overall efficiency of capacity utilization at the intersection. In this research, left-turn waiting area was evaluated using a mathematical model and VISSIM was then used to validate the mathematical model. A case study was conducted on an intersection with a left-turn waiting area in China to evaluate the different parameters considered in the mathematical model. Finally, left-turn waiting area conditions were simulated for an intersection with high left-turn volumes in United States and the benefits were analyzed. The results show that the maximum speed has increased in the left turn bay as the waiting area acts as an acceleration lane for the vehicles. They also show considerable increase in the overall efficiency of capacity utilization and decrease in the total delay time at the intersection.
