Education has always been perceived in the United States as the great equalizer and the avenue to success for American youth. In order for the American public education system to be effective moving into this century a new level of commitment and support will be demanded. More has to be invested in changing schools to serve a greater diversity of needs and to pay the well prepared educators to make those schools “work.” The small learning communities’ literature has evidence that this model/strategy creates opportunities for students, parents, and educators to create learning inspired best practices conducive to learning, while also bringing a better sense of accountability in standardized testing especially in underperforming schools. Data from this study revealed that students on a campus implementing small learning communities performed significantly better than students on a traditionally operated campus in Biology and World Geography STAAR test outcomes. Small learning communities (SLCs) did not perform better in either Algebra I or English I and further investigation is needed to gain a better understanding of why SLCs did not have an impact on English I and Algebra I scores.
